Midbar Ranch Property Location
Midbar Ranch is situated in the Bootheel of southwestern New Mexico.
Of the 21,371 total acres, 7,120 acres are deeded (private) and contiguous, 14,251 acres are a grazing allotment in the Peloncillo Mountains on the Coronado National Forest. The deeded land is in the grassy savannah of the Upper Animas Valley. The major plant communities are desert grasslands, madrean encinal woodland and pinon/juniper woodland. The lower end of the Clanton Draw (one of the two major drainages on the ranch) shows an overstorey of non-riparian obligate oak and juniper.
Elevation ranges from 5200 feet on the deeded land to 6395 feet in the mountains. The ranch sits over two separate water basins: the Upper Animas which is declared and the Cloverdale which as yet is undeclared.
Approximately 4 miles of the western boundary of the private land borders the Coronado National Forest providing exclusive access to the forest. The ranch has but one neighbor, the vast Diamond A/Animas Foundation which has conservation easements with the Nature Conservancy. This enhances the privacy of Midbar Ranch which is unencumbered by easements.
The nearest town is Animas with a post office, feed and hardware store with fuel, a convenience store with fuel, and a good school grades K-12. Cities with shopping and medical facilities are: Lordsburg (75 miles), Silver City and Demming NM (both 130 miles). Las Cruces NM (175 miles). Tucson AZ and El Paso TX both with international airports are about 200 miles.
The ranch is also situated in the middle of the "Malpai Borderlands Group" operating in an 800,000 acre area of Southeast Arizona and Southwest New Mexico. Most of the ranches in this area also have conservation easements.
